POWERED ACCESS GUIDE

Powered Access for Steel Erection and Structural Work

Structural work can require large working envelopes, outdoor terrain capability and coordination with cranes, telehandlers and other trades. The access plan should therefore be based on the construction sequence and site conditions, not height alone.

01

Construction sequence

Identify when the work occurs and what structure will exist at that point. The machine position and access route may change as the build progresses.

02

Reach requirement

Steel connections, secondary steel and envelope interfaces can require vertical access, outreach or both.

03

Ground and interfaces

Discuss prepared surfaces, gradients, excavations and interaction with other plant routes.

04

Platform work

Tools, fixings and materials carried by the work team should be included when discussing platform requirements.

05

Coordinate access with the structural sequence

Connection points and machine positions can change quickly as steel, decking, edge protection and envelope elements are installed. Describe the phase of work in which the access is required and any planned changes to haul roads or working platforms. A machine selected for an early frame condition may not remain practical later in the programme.

06

Include interfaces with cranes and other plant

MEWPs on structural projects often work close to cranes, telehandlers, delivery vehicles and other access equipment. The enquiry should identify known interfaces and available operating zones. This helps suppliers understand whether reach, manoeuvring space or terrain capability is likely to be the limiting factor before proposing a specific machine.
