Scissor Lift vs Cherry Picker: Which Type of Access Fits the Job?

The simplest distinction is geometry: scissor lifts primarily move vertically, while cherry pickers and boom-type platforms can position the platform horizontally away from the base. The actual choice depends on the work point, obstacles, standing position and site conditions.

01

Start with the work point

Identify where the operative needs to stand to complete the task. If the machine can position directly below the work, a scissor lift may be worth considering. If the platform must reach over equipment, a roof edge, landscaping or another obstruction, a boom-type solution may be more appropriate.

02

Compare the working platform

Scissor lifts can provide a comparatively broad platform for people, tools and materials. Boom platforms are typically selected for positioning and outreach. The job method should therefore be considered alongside height.

03

Check the site before choosing

Access width, floor or ground conditions, manoeuvring space and indoor/outdoor restrictions can rule categories in or out. A technically capable machine is not useful if it cannot reach the operating position safely.

04

What to send with an enquiry

Provide the work height, approximate outreach, photographs or drawings if useful, access restrictions, ground/floor conditions, job timing and what will be carried in the platform.

05

Think about productivity as well as geometry

Where the work runs along a broad elevation or overhead service zone, platform size and the need to reposition the machine can affect how practical a category is. A scissor platform may suit repeated vertical work where the base can remain below the task, while a boom can reduce repositioning on some jobs by reaching across an obstruction. The work sequence should be described to the supplier.

06

Do not use the comparison as a substitute for a site assessment

Both categories contain many different machine configurations. Indoor floors, rough external ground, restricted access, gradients, wind exposure and platform loading can change the answer. Use the comparison to identify the likely access geometry, then verify the exact machine and operating conditions with the supplier and the project’s work-at-height controls.

QUESTIONS

QUICK ANSWERS

Is a cherry picker always better for high work?+

No. Height alone does not determine the category; reach geometry, platform requirement and site conditions matter.

Can a scissor lift reach sideways?+

Scissor lifts are primarily vertical-access machines. Some platforms may have deck extensions, but they do not provide boom-style outreach.
